As a strong cold front barreled its way across the Southeast, plans emerged to check out Egmont Key for potential surf. After a promising exploratory mission to Shell Key a few weeks prior, the gang was psyched to see what a stronger system would produce wave-wise.

The front pushed through Wednesday night and Thursday was the day. The strong winds coupled with a huge full moon low tide made for some tricky conditions. It was not possible to safely get to Egmont. The shipping channel that seperates Egmont Key and Fort Desoto was completely closed out on either side with 4 – 8 ft breaking waves and shallow water. After unsuccessfully attempting to get through, we decided to check the inlet between Fort Desoto and Shell Key: Bunce’s Pass.

By the time we were in the water, the waves had diminished to 2 – 3 feet. Had we stopped at Bunce’s first we surely would have enjoyed the 3 – 5 footers we saw rolling through. Though it was no Teahupoo, the lack of crowds and the effort required to get there ensured all came away smiling

I recently dusted off some terrabytes and found some old classics. In this new How To exclusive, Laban Swafford demonstrates the proper way to take a Giant Gear-Ripping Whipper.

Step 1: Find a big, bad-ass route in North Carolina that has yet to be freed. (Wear your hard hat for safety of course)

Step 2: In an effort to preserve tradition based on local lore and ethics, clip your snatchlinks to a jumbled mess of aluminum and wire. Repeat to yourself “They’re bomber…” or maybe “I won’t fall.”

Step 3: Climb through the crux, over grip, get pumped and of course – take the whip.

This is part 2. Check out part 1.

See Rock and Ice Issue 195 for the full feature on Sierra adventures.

It seems that for every backcountry objective ticked off in the Sierra, a dozen more pop up. The entire range is filled with unimaginable amounts of fresh granite beckoning the adventurous climber. The tricky part – choosing one and getting there. The hike’s are long and the terrain rough, but the payoff is worth it – white castles.

Two climbers approach Day Needle, Keeler Needle and Mt Whitney from just below Iceberg Lake.

We had heard tall tales of large walls and plenty of unclimbed lines in the Whitney region, so a recon was in order. A quick trip up to tag a few classics yielded great summit views from Mt Whitney and Mt Russel of the surrounding walls in the area. Three things were instantly clear: the stories of abundant walls were true, they would require much strenuous walking to get to, we needed to hire a plane for a better view. Finding a plane and pilot to fly one through the Sierra is no small task. Apparently, all “sightseeing tour” operations have basically stopped. Not willing to accept defeat, I set out on an epic journey through the town of Lone Pine, complete with shifty characters and back-alley deals, in search of anyone with a plane and a willingness to help with the dream that is Sierra backcountry first ascents. Fortunately, everything came together and we had a wheels up time of 7:30am the following morning.

Throughout our flight we saw numerous amazing crags and walls, but our attention kept returning to one – Mt Chamberlin. Our psyche was high and we began planning our journey to Chamberlin immediately. As it turned out, our pals Jimmy Haden and Mike Pennings were also planning on a trip to Chamberlin at the same time. Awesome, party in the backcountry! Being 12 miles out, up and over the Whitney Crest, and wanting to stay for over a week, we knew the approach would be painful to say the least. Time to embrace our inner pack mules and learn how to hike. Mike seemed to think the hike would take 5 hours. We would soon come to learn of his sandbagging nature.

Oh no! 70 lb packs for the grueling approach does not equal fun.

After a 5 hour hike that actually took a day and a half, we were finally dropping in to the Crabtree basin and Mt Chamberlin. Surfing through knee deep scree and eventually reaching grass hummocks and meandering streams, we were immediately struck by the beauty of the place. Towering ivory walls lined the valley while lush flowering meadows and perfect boulders filled its interior.

A quick hacky session with some beers provided just the stretch-out that our fatigued legs needed. We’d have time in the morning to scope some potential new lines.

Chamberlin and star trails on a full moon night.

Asleep at the Wheel climbs through the obvious white square high on the central buttress.

The possibilities for new lines seem infinite, but the king line by far is a climb that Mike and Jimmy established in 2006 – Asleep at the Wheel. Jimmy had this to say about the route: “We named the route, Asleep at the Wheel, after an interesting encounter with the only other person back where we were. After crashing his car on the drive, he remained so dedicated to his Chamberlin mission, that he grabbed his pack, stuck out his thumb and continued. Asleep at the Wheel (V 5.12-) was completed without hammers, pins, or bolts and is one of the finest backcountry routes in the Sierra.” Well that settles that – we were psyched to go repeat the route with Mike and Jimmy repeating it as well.

In the interest of safety, we decided NOT to follow Jimmy and Mike and their torrent of death blocks up Asleep at the Wheel. Instead, we wandered down the cliff searching for a potential line. It didn’t take long to spot a system of leaning cracks and corners leading up to a detached pillar near the summit. Perfect. Despite the late start, mellow cracks and intriguing knob climbing led us to the summit of our first new route at Mt Chamberlin: Safety First. And to think, we almost spent the day in camp.

Time for a well-deserved rest day. High on the list for the day, in addition to scoping new lines, was catching the elusive Golden Trout, patching pin holes in our Thermarests and quite possibly – bathing.

With our supplies running low and the weather beginning to turn, it was time to leave Mt Chamberlin. Our plan was to contour out of the Crabtree Basin and into the Hitchcock Basin where we could hook up with the John Muir Trail as well as recon the potential for new lines on the cliffs above the Hitchcock Lakes.

Routes

All told, 3 new routes were completed at Mt Chamberlin during the Summer 2010 season, and Mike and Jimmy repeated their climb Asleep at the Wheel for its second ascent. “The Sword in the Stone” shares its upper pitches with the Copp/Davis route “I Fink Therefore I Am.” “Safety First” likely shares its upper pitches with “Barracuda” put up by Dave Nettle and Brandon Thau in 2006.

Mike and Jimmy, having headed over to the Hitchcock basin a few days before us, were able to establish the first line in that area on a formation they dubbed Alfred’s Tooth. Their line, “Pleasure Garden”, follows a continuous splitter to the top of the tooth.

Jimmy and Mike put up a new route, the first on this formation, on the walls above Hitchcock Lakes. Pleasure Garden takes a plumb line up unbelievable splitters to the top of Alfred's Tooth.

EPILOGUE

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that what you’ve just seen is an anomaly. That all the sweetest plums in North America were plucked long ago. That the climbers you’ve just heard about are mutants who cruise 5.13 in the backcountry and subsist on a steady diet of mountain trout and stewed krummholtz. That the only way you’re gonna get to climb splitter new routes is to hone your climbing skills to the elite level, travel to the far corners of the earth, and endure interminable bad weather, hourly avalanches, and harrowing runouts. I know what you’re thinking because that’s what I thought too. That is, before I put down the guidebook, trusted my instincts, and ventured ever so slightly off the beaten path. Right here in the good ol’ US of A.

What you’ve actually just seen is a bunch of fun-loving guys with a sense of adventure and a little extra time on their hands. Except for Pennings and Haden, who actually are 5.13 backcountry mutants. But that’s beside the point. The rest of us are just regular dudes doing their first first ascents. And loving it.

And you can too. It’s not that scary. It’s not that difficult. All it requires is an open mind and a committment to the process.

Domestic alpinism is alive and well.

Now go out there and get some!

See Rock and Ice Issue 195 for the full feature on Sierra adventures.

Two days into our supposed one day approach, near the summit of Mt. Whitney, things were getting grim. It wasn’t really one thing that was causing discomfort, but more of a combination of many minor and not so minor issues. The 70 pound packs didn’t help. Nor did the 12 mile approach up and over the Whitney Crest – the tallest ridge in the lower 48. Beyond the crest however, lay the stuff dreams are made of; gold and ivory ramparts shooting straight to the sky – white castles.

The Incredible Hulk and Maltby Lake.

It all started a year previous while basecamping at The Incredible Hulk with my partner, Josh Finkelstein. Perfect white granite, sandy bivy sites, bountiful fishing – the place provided so much inspiration that we vowed to return the following year with friends for Hulk-a-Mania 2010.

While at the Hulk in ’09 we met two bad ass dudes with a similar mission as ours – head into the hills and climb soaring white castles. One of them, Jimmy Haden, was on the first ascent of Sunspot Dihedral, and the other, Mike Pennings, is known throughout the land for his ability absolute need to “stay in the ‘pine.” Jimmy and Mike spoke of bigger, more remote and more wild walls deeper in the Sierra. We were hooked.

Fast forward to Summer 2010.

After getting our groove back in Tuolumne, we’ve returned to the Hulk, complete with a small posse psyched on the dream that is Hulk-a-Mania. Representing North Carolina are Jacob Neathawk and Sam Fagg, while Josh’s friend Gabe Metzger and a long lost buddy from Camp 4, Taylor, have hooked up as the hometown Cali crew. With the weather forecast calling for highs in the low 70′s, no wind and 3% chance of precipitation, we knew this was shaping up to be all time.

Having already climbed the ultra-mega-classic Positive Vibrations last year(twice – its that good), there was only one logical option for us – Sunspot Dihedral. Jimmy had raved about this line last year, and we were eager to get up there and feel it for ourselves. We had other motivations too. A link up of Sunspot, Positive, and The Red Dihedral ranked high on our wish list.

Just like Positive Vibrations, Sunspot was so awesome that we decided to do it again. Only this time would be a photo mission with Josh leading every pitch allowing me to shoot Gabe and Taylor climbing below us.

Taylor Lamoureaux on the wild third pitch traverse of Sunspot Dihedral.

As we approached the top of the climb, the weather began to turn. The wind whipped up and the temps plummeted. Time to drop the clutch and punch it to the top. Gunning for the Venturi Effect raps, we jumped onto the most direct path – the top of Positive Vibes. Traversing over, we snaked a British team finishing up Positive, but they were psyched for photos and psyched to share ropes on the descent.

Brits on the last pitch of Positive Vibes.

What next? An alpine rest day complete with capes, trout and snowgaritas with friends, of course.

After our epic rest day, our batteries were recharged and we felt ready for the linkup. Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite manage Sunspot, Positive and the Red Dihedral. Why not? Well, to be frank, that would have involved getting up way too early. So in the interest of fun, we leisurely unzipped our bags around 8am and cruised our way up Positive Vibes and The Red Dihedral at just the right pace so as to catch the sunset on the summit. After all, timing is everything.

To quote the wise words and sage advice of Dave Nettle, Peter Croft and Greg Epperson: “It’s good to pack a (rope) gun!” and “Wahoo!”

Summit register entry from the birth of Airstream.

.

And now for a Public Service Announcement:

As a large group in the backcountry we felt it imperative to minimize our impact. We hate nothing more than arriving at one of our favorite pristine places and finding human evidence. Whether its trash, fire rings, feces or trampled vegetation, creating such things removes the sense of desolation and wilderness for those that follow. On Hulk-a-Mania 2010 we chose to contain our presence to sandy seasonal lake bottoms and to pack out ALL of our waste. We hope you’ll do the same to preserve not just the area, but the future wilderness experiences of others.

Crucial piece for the rack - the wag bag!

Stay tuned for the next installment. The hikes get longer and the walls get taller…

The international world of grand prix motorsports descended onto the streets of St Petersburg, FL over the weekend for the first event of the 2011 IRL season. With half of downtown and the airport cordoned off as part of the track, and the other half of downtown playing support to the myriad workers, racers, spectators and entrepreneurs looking to get in on the action, St Pete never seemed so hustling and bustling through all hours of the day.

And even if motorsports aren’t your thing, fast cars doing 160 mph down the streets of ANY downtown are always cool.

‘Tis (almost) the season for backcountry climbing. Warm air is slowly making its way into the mountains while thoughts of remote f.a.’s and the associated logistics slowly creep their way into my mind. The Sierra have so many options it seems the hardest part is narrowing it down to just one.

Last year Josh Finkelstein and I did a bit of aerial recon into the hills to have a look for ourselves. Walls galore. All you’ve got to do is just hike out there…

Our noble steed, a suped up Cessna 182.
